What we plan for in a school or college

  1. DBS and safeguardingEveryone on site holds an enhanced DBS check, signs in through reception and follows the school's safeguarding policy, including where they may and may not go.
  2. Holiday programmesMajor work is compressed into the summer holiday, with a programme written with the other contractors before term ends and labour committed to it.
  3. Term-time workingWork in term time happens out of hours, and is kept away from pupils' routes, with areas left safe and clean each morning.
  4. Asbestos registersWe read the asbestos register before we price and before we drill, and stop and report if we find anything it doesn't show.
  5. Emergency lightingEscape routes, halls and stairwells brought up to standard, often with self-test fittings so the monthly tests stop falling to the site team.
  6. Fire detectionFire alarm upgrades to BS 5839-1, changed zone by zone so the building is never without cover while it's occupied.
  7. Science, sport and kitchensLaboratory isolation panels, sports hall lighting and kitchen supplies, each tested and demonstrated to the staff who will use them.
  8. Handover before termEvery area is tested, certified and cleaned before staff come back, with documents in the trust's portal for the estates team.
