What to do right now

Most electrical emergencies are safer and cheaper to deal with if you do three things before you call.

At night, an electrician in a head torch tests an open consumer unit while the homeowner, in a dressing gown, holds up her phone light.

Before you call

  1. Stay safe

If you can smell burning or see smoke, get everyone out and call 999. Don't touch anything that is hot, sparking or wet.

  2. Check next door

If the street is dark too, it's a power cut, not your wiring. Call 105 to report it to the network, free, day or night.

  3. Look at your fuse board

If a switch has tripped, turn every circuit off, reset the main switch, then turn circuits back on one at a time. The one that trips it again is the fault: leave it off.

  4. Then call us

Tell us what happened and what you've tried. We'll tell you straight away whether it can wait until morning.
